The Aga Muhlach Experience

The Aga Muhlach is lauded as one of the perennial poster boys of Philippine Cinema during his prime. And up to now, he can very much give the present leading men in the industry a run for their money.

Disclaimer: I am not a fanboy. Well, pogi talaga siya that's fo sho. Too handsome that an ordinary boy during the 90's aspires to be dubbed a "Muhlach" or be called an "Aga Muhlach" which no doubt, is a big ego booster especially in the company of them ladies.

But let's not delve on his perfect looks and those pair of makalaglag-panty dimples. Let's focus on his other side. His vulnerability - what makes him human, not a demigod, in front of the camera.

Aga's reign of sublime chick flicks and notable dramatic roles has had him gushing and heartbroken for a number of very common reasons (circa 90s - late 2000s).

Here's what I think are the causes of Aga's heartaches in some of his notable starrers:

Brokenhearted for being a workaholic:
*Sana Maulit Muli (1995) - So, what constitutes the perfect recipe for a relationship disaster? Be an idealistic advertising workhorse in Jerry (na mas inuuna pa si Cherry Pie Picache), partnered with a painfully shy ladylove in Agnes (Lea Salonga) who flies abroad and eventually hits the big breaks in the US. Ano Aga, work pa more? Only a few can withstand the choking of long distance. LDR=FML.

Heartache brought by a dysfunctional family:
*May Minamahal (1993) - Carlitos leading an all-female household when his father suddenly passes away, is something out of the ordinary. Pestering our pretty boy here is the herculean task of running the family -- including their diminishing finances, severed ties, and even groceries. Yes, that infamous dispute with Trina (Agot Isidro) about the gamot sa puno. (What the fuck?) It's so frustrating and troublesome, you can hardly notice that there's romance brewing between him and Monica (Aiko). Lol.

The evolution of Claudine Barretto from sister to lover:
*May Minamahal (1993), Oki Doki Doc (1996), Kailangan Kita (2002) -
Etong pinakamatindi. The on-screen chemistry between these two high-caliber actors went from cutesy to seductive real quick. Well, not really THAT quick. Playing Pinky in 1993, she played Aga's devoted, slighty-demured little sister. Jump to 1996, she portrayed a coming-of-age teen named Toni in the defunct sit-com turned movie. And finally, six years later, she came full circle to become Carl's local flavored affair. It was a sinful culinary love story, pero selfish and twisted din to say the least. To conclude, Aga Muhlach is a vampire who doesn't age and preys on poor, little, beautiful girls. And Claudine? Never mind.

But wait there's more.

I also included a few notables for you to ponder.

Gay-ka-ba? vs Playboy:
*Narinig mo na ba ang l8est? (2001), Kung Ako Na Lang Sana (2003) -
Ladies, how do you like your Aga? The Popoy: Handsome, eligible bachelor with a penchant for culinary pursuits, lives with his grandma, matapang magpabango, and simply refutes seeing the female species as a sex object. Therefore, napapagkamalan siyang beki.
On the other hand, check out The Vince (or Enteng): Charming. Laidback. Notorious Philanderer. From the bimbo in the bar, to his friend's little cousin, Enteng is your womanizer that Britney bitches about. Malandi. Maharot. Ma-L. Not justifying it, pero may K naman talaga sya, diba?

The Demise of the Muhlach:
All My Life (2004), First Love (2018), Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2019) - For Chrissake! Why do movies delight in killing our precious Aga???

In 2004, he died of Cardiomyopathy. No cure. Walang ligtas.
Come 2018, nalagutan sya ng hininga sa Keneduh because of a congenital heart disease. The poor guy just wants to enjoy sisig!
And in 2019, he was wrongfully charged with sexually assaulting and murdering a little girl which led to his extermination.

Ouch.

Why so merciless, dear cinema?
